THE CHURCH WORSHIPS TOGETHER

Keeping Promises…Who sees it?

~Gathering~

Prelude: “O Holy Night” -arr. John S. Dwight

Welcome & Announcements

Focus Statement:

God is faithful in keeping promises on the journey but unless we are keenly attuned, we may not recognize promises fulfilled. Even as we wait, we can be assured that God is active in working out the plan of restoring and healing. May we have the eyes to see God’s active presence, and may we have a voice to share what we have seen.

Time of Meditation: “Peace, Peace”

-Legacy Christian School Women’s Choir

(The bells being played in this video were donated by our church to LCS)

Hymn of Gathering: Angels from the Realms of Glory v1, 2 (printed in bulletin)

Call to Worship:

Leader: As we worship today God, we ask this of you:

Right: Wipe pride from our hearts, that we might truly

                         love one another.

Left: Rinse conceit from our eyes that we might see one

                       another as you see.

Leader: We rest in your promises and wait for you.

People: Calm and quiet, we trust in you.

         Leader: Open our hearts,

All: That we might let go of all that separates us from

                         you and one another.

~Hearing God’s Word~

Scripture: Luke 2:21-38

Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now

dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen

your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of

all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the

            glory of your people Israel.”

Message: “The Journey May be Difficult, but the Blessings are

                       Abundant”  ~Darcy Miller

    Isaiah 61:10 - 62:3 (NIV)

I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For

he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me

in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head

like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For

as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes

seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness

and praise spring up before all nations.

For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem’s sake I

will not remain quiet, till her vindication shines out like the

dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. The nations will see

your vindication, and all kings your glory; you will be called

by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow. You

will be a crown of splendor in the Lord’s hand, a royal

diadem in the hand of your God.

       Galatians 4: 4 -7 (NIV)

But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born

of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the

law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Because you

are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the

Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a

slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has

       made you also an heir.

Our Advent Theme: Together on a Journey

Sing the Journey, one of our Mennonite songbooks, evokes

wonderful images of voices blending in praise as we travel

together on a path toward a deeper understanding of faith. The

road can be smooth for stretches, but also includes rough patches that may challenge or discourage. Its course is not set; if we are attentive, we may notice God’s guiding hand redirecting us. Each of our journeys in faith is unique but meant to be lived in community. Together, let’s join our voices as we travel the path that draws us closer to God.

Advent Altar Display: This year’s visual display incorporates both the traditional Advent Wreath candlelighting, and the lighting of candles on the altar which corresponds to the theme of the day. The display began quite unadorned, with only candles and a purple cloth making a path to the first candle. You may have noticed that the purple cloth “path” has been moving across the altar a little each week, and a symbol representing the theme

for each Sunday of advent has been added—a rock, a heart, a frayed cloth, a multi-colored cloth, and today, a mirror, as we reflect on our own journey stories.

Christmas Fun: Can you spot the hikers? As we have celebrated Christmas, the hikers have arrived at the altar!

FMC LIVES IN DISCIPLESHIP TOGETHER

Next Sunday, Jan. 5, we will have our final journey story, one that you don’t want to miss! Larry Compton will be our guest speaker and share about his journey to Mt. Everest and his time in Nepal.

End-of-year reports: Please submit your end-of-year summaries to Tabby in the office as soon as possible so she can begin to prepare the Congregational Report.

Mennonite Arts Weekend: Early-bird registration is open for the 2025

Mennonite Arts Weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio, February 7-9. This

weekend celebrates the creativity and discipline of Anabaptist

Mennonite artists. Find the list of presenters, registration and location

Different arrangements of "Silent Night" will be used each Sunday during the Time of Meditation to emphasize the theme. Cover Art: Visio Divina—The Clapping Trees ARTIST: Len Rempel (Visio Divina Collection, 2023) Advent 2025: This year, our theme is, “Be Amazed!” Each week, we’ll be invited to notice the surprising and powerful ways in which God shows up—even when we least expect it. We invite you to immerse yourself in the visuals and explore the theme, “Be Amazed!” in several ways: *One way is through the picture you will see each week on the big screen as you walk into the sanctuary. Even before the service begins, you can look at the picture and along with it, the introductory scripture which you can read in the Bibles located in the pews, or bring your own Bible. This way you can contemplate the story of the scripture passage and prepare for the worship to follow. *Another way we invite you to explore the theme is through the symbol of a star. The stars remind us of God’s mysterious and guiding presence—distant yet near, powerful yet gentle. Like the blazing stars in the sky, God’s glory is sometimes hidden from view by our distractions, expectations or the “clouds” of daily life. Yet, the light of God is always shining—waiting for us to notice. Just as the Magi followed the star to find Christ, we too are invited to look up, notice, and be amazed by God’s presence. Watch as this display becomes brighter each week to reflect the growing light and clarity of God’s revelation, culminating in the full radiance of Christ’s birth at Christmas. We also invite you to ponder God’s amazing stories represented by the symbols placed on the altar each Sunday. As we wait for the fullness of Christmas, may this light call us to look up, look around, and be amazed at the God who comes close—bringing hope, peace, joy, and love, even in the places you least expect it. May you find wonder in the work God is doing in your life this Christmas! FMC LIVES IN DISCIPLESHIP TOGETHER Mission Project for December: White Gift Offering During the four Sundays of Advent, we will be collecting to replenish the Deacon’s Fund, which is money available to members of our church in need. Look for the specially designated green sleigh as you enter the sanctuary. You can give cash or make a check out to FMC designated White Gift. Let’s fill the sleigh to help others on their way! We pray on this second Sunday of Advent for peace as a renewal of body, mind, and spirit. Time of Meditation : “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” -performed by The Piano Guys Call to Worship: Leader: God in our desert, you are our peace to all places. People: Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely. Leader: Thus says the LORD GOD: “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” People: Can these dry bones live? Leader: The wind of God moves among these dry bones. Stand and live! People: We are the people of God, a vast multitude, filled with God’s Spirit. Leader: “I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live. I will place you on your own soil; then you shall Know that I, the LORD, have spoken and will act,” says the LORD. All: You are the only source of true life, O God. You breathe new life into our dry bones and fill us with your peace. We stand before you, ready to enter your story and be amazed. THE CHURCH WORSHIPS TOGETHER Advent One: Hope in the Furnace ~Gathering~ Preludes: "I Wonder as I Wander" - Appalachian folk song --arr. Jay Rouse "I wonder as I wander out under the sky..." "In the Bleak Midwinter" --arr. Larry Shackley Welcome& Announcements Opening Hymn: VT 237 Now the Heavens v1 Advent Scripture: Habakkuk 1:1-5 The prophecy that Habakkuk the prophet received. How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save? Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, a conflict abounds. Therefore the law is paralyzed, a justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted. “Look at the nations and see! Be astonished! Be astounded! For work is being done in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.” Focus Statement: Imagine stepping into a blazing furnace with Shadrach, Meshach and Abendigo in a trial by fire, trusting God with your life. Although today’s trials seem less terrifying, they are still trials—stories of injustice, poverty, and tragedy from our lives, communities and the larger world. At the beginning of Advent, as the light dims, and we wonder how long we must wait, we also tell amazing stories of hope, stories of a God who saves so that we may emerge singing: Oh, great is the Lord! Thy name shall endure! Let heaven and earth, oh, let all sing Thy praise! Time of Meditation: "O Lord of Light, Who Made the Stars / "Of the Father's Love Begotten" - arr. Curt Oliver Call to Worship: Leader: God of our ancestors, you are our constant hope through all ages. People: We come eager for stories of you standing among us. We come longing to feel your presence among your people once again. Leader: As the days darken around us, hope can feel a distant memory. People: Even in the middle of trials, we keep our eyes on you. Our allegiance is to you alone. Leader: Trust in God’s steadfast love. Stand in amazement, ready to recognize God already among us here, in this place. All: Our hope is in you, O God. Fill our hearts with the courage of our ancestors. Ready us to enter their story and be amazed. Opening Prayer Advent Candlelighting Litany (Mike Keim, candlelighter) Leader: We have been wandering in the dark, fear engulfing us like a burning furnace. We long for your hope to find us and silence the flames of our fears. People: Come, Hope of the world. Come amaze us! All: May your hope flood the flames of our fears.
