Julie: We have come together today to offer the comforters provided by MCC that we've knotted to send to places where disaster and wars have occurred, people are on the move, and where basic resources have grown scarce.  As we dedicate these gifts, let us join in prayer.


God of earthquake, wind, flood, and fire, may those who have suffered in disasters and wars find refuge in you.  Help them in their distress to trust in your mercy which never ends.

People:  God of compassion, hear our prayer.

Tally:  We pray for those who are afflicted by powers far beyond their control, who are grieving and afraid and who are vulnerable to further loss.  May you speed to them relief, and strengthen them to face the challenges before them.

People:  God of compassion, hear our prayer.

April:  We urgently pray this day for families across our nation who have been injured or displaced by natural disasters.  We pray for families around the world seeking to rebuild their lives.  We pray for those in areas of conflict and war.

People:  God of compassion, hear our prayer.

Keo:  May you strengthen those who are responding to crises and are engaged in the work of disaster relief, providing food and shelter, clothing, or transportation to those in peril.

People:  God of compassion, hear our prayer.

Amy:  May the comforters that we offer today contribute to this sacred work and may those who receive them sense your loving kindness and find their hope renewed.

People:  God of compassion, renew us in hope and service as we offer our gifts and our lives to you.

Focus Statement:

Crossing a body of water.  If it's a puddle, one could splash

through it, jump over it, or walk around it.  If it's larger,

one might need a bridge, a boat or a tunnel.  Rarely do we

find that God parts the waters for us except in a couple of

Scriptures like the passage in Joshua for today.  We do often

face roadblocks and then we need to pause, to pray, to

listen for God's voice, to act, and then to express our

gratitude for God's leading.

MMN: Mennonite Mission Network requests prayer for Joseph and Rachel Givens and their sons, Elijah, 8, and Micaiah, 4, as they adapt to life in Calais, France.  Pray for them as the boys prepare to begin school and as Joseph and Rachel immerse themselves in language study before settling into ministry at the Maria Skobtsova House, which offers temporary shelter to migrants from Africa and the Middle East.

Prayers for Mennonite Education-Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, VA: Please pray for our new and returning students as they transition into a new season of education, exploration, and community-building.  May they enjoy rekindling friendships, find new friends, and begin to build a strong and healthy community of support for the year ahead.

August 28, 2022:  Access to the Well


     "Some families are lucky.  They can turn on the tap for drinking water, to fill a bathtub, wash theri car or water the garden.  But other families around the world are less fortunate.  One billion people, almost 16% of Earth's population, have to walk more than fifteen minutes to get to the nearest water supply.  there, they gather water for the day--just a few jugs, barley enough for drinking, cooking and cleaning.  Other families don't have access to enough water to meet even these most basic needs.

     "While the amount of water on Earth is always the same, the distribution of water across the world isn't.  Huge differences in rainfall can happen from country to country and even within the same country.  Less rainfall means less water available in lakes, rivers and aquifers.  Sometimes there just isn't enough water where it's needed most.

     "Because water is not evenly distributed across the globe, nearly one-fifth of the world's population does not have access to enough water.  Many of these people live in Africa and Asia.

     "1.  North America has one-third of the population of Africa, yet North Americans use three times as much water.  How is that possible?  Nearly 300 million people in Africa do not have access to enough freshwater.

     "2.  A bucket of water weighs about 10kg. (22 lbs.)  Imagine if you had to carry a bucket or two from a well to your house every day.

     "3.  China and India are home to over one-third of the world's population, yet they only have access to one-tenth of the world's freshwater."

THE CHURCH WORSHIPS TOGETHER “Patient Trust” by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. We should like to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new. And yet it is the law of all progress that it is made by passing through some stages of instability— and that it may take a very long time. ~Gathering~ Prelude Welcome& Announcements Introductory Poem: As we step into Lent, we say “welcome” to the dissonance. “We reserve a space for lament and grief to stay a while and do their work. We release our nice little pictures of perfect selves, perfect faith, perfect world, and look for God in the heartache. We listen for God in discordant melodies and follow Jesus to the cross, though we don’t understand and it doesn’t compute.” As we step into Lent, we say, “welcome” to the dissonance, trusting that God is here, now, in the mystery, before it is resolved. Focus Statement: This week, our attention turns to the cast of characters beyond Jesus at his “trial.” Notice the roles various people play in this horrible moment. We are faced with our dissonance when we feel powerless, complicit, innocent, or accused. Hymn of Dissonance: VT 48 Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life (This hymn was chosen for its dissonant harmonies as well as for the words. Today we will sing all verses.) Call to Worship: All: Welcome Lent— WL: terrible dissonance, as we condemn the Human One. All: Welcome lament and confession WL: as the story comes undone. All: Welcome holy mystery WL: that even this can find a place in the tale of God’s salvation. All: Welcome suffering love and grace. Invocation Hymn of Gathering: HWB 37 Praise to the Lord ~Praising & Praying~ Prayers of the People Confession Poem: All: Jesus, things don’t always turn out the way we expect. Or want. And sometimes your choices (or the choices of our neighbors or family members or politicians) really don’t agree with us. Reader 1: We hate to admit it, but we feel for the angry crowd. In our fury, we too can become so consumed, so focused on who or what we are opposing, that we turn away from the things that matter most. Reader 2: “We have no king but the emperor!” we find ourselves saying. And only after we hear our voice do we realize how distorted our allegiance has become. God, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Just as Jesus endured the trials of Holy Week, we too are committed to wait and to fully experience the dissonance in our lives. The worship services during this season will attempt to help us be more comfortable with the dissonances—as reflected in the altar, the music, in the book of John on which our services will focus, and in those disturbing times in our lives. After the sermon during Lent, there will be a three-minute period where we will be writing our thoughts about one of the questions printed on the bulletin insert. When the three minutes are over, the offering plates will be passed for you to put your paper in the plate to be taken to the altar. Please put your pen on the seat beside you so that we can continue to use them each Sunday in Lent. FMC LIVES IN DISCIPLESHIP TOGETHER Mission Project for March: MCC Hygiene Kits Keeping clean is an important part of staying healthy. Families who have fled their homes because of disaster or war often struggle to afford the necessary supplies. Kits also go to schools or orphanages to encourage healthy habits for children. A list of items needed is on the table in the coffee and fellowship area. Fox is having a three-part Biblical event starting tonight at 8 p.m . called The Faithful: Women of the Bible. Each episode follows the journey of five women of faith: Sarah, Hagar, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel. THE CHURCH GIVES THANKS FOR Mike Keim: Jim Cahill continues to do well. THE CHURCH PRAYS FOR Mike Keim: Chris went into a fib yesterday and needs our prayers. April Shupe: Karissa’s mom fell and broke her shoulder. She had her shoulder replaced. Linda Yoder: Mom had blockage of 95% and had a stint put in. Dan Hostetler: Nate Miller has passed away.
