raging storm?  Do you run and hide like Jonah?  Do you question God,

why?  Or are you like Peter, "Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on

the water."  "Come," said Jesus.  Storms will happen.  Keeping your eye

on Jesus will get you through the storm.

For God's leading us like Naaman, and the joy we find when we listen.

Praise that we raised $932.21 for My Coins Count this year for MCC.

For all of the hard work and time that our trustees put into our church.  Also to Mike & Kristy Keim for weeding all of the flower beds.

Todd Schrock, Wade Flinner, Nancy Yoder, for teachers, students and staff that are returning to school.

MMN: Mennonite Mission Network requests prayer for Joseph and Rachel Givens and their sons, Elijah, 8, and Micaiah, 4, as they adapt to life in Calais, France.  Pray for them as the boys prepare to begin school and as Joseph and Rachel immerse themselves in language study before settling into ministry at the Maria Skobtsova House, which offers temporary shelter to migrants from Africa and the Middle East.

Prayers for Mennonite Education-Goshen College: Pray for new students as they move-in and begin this new season of life.

August 14, 2022:  People at the Well


   "Since the beginning of time, people have depended on water--for drinking, for food, for bathing and for watering their crops.  Water has always provided a highway to move people and products from place to place.  As cities and societies grow so does their need for water.

   "Today, water is essential in our homes, in industry and in agriculture.  At home we use water for cleaning, cooking, drinking, flushing toilets and for bathing.  But homes account for only 10% of all the freshwater used.

   "About 21% of the water we use goes to make everything from computer to cars.  Water it used in hydroelectric plants to generate electricity and in petroleum plants to make gas.  In factories, water is used to heat things up or cool things down and to wash away waste.  Water vapor (steam) even runs machinery.  Water is also an ingredient in many products, such as lotions, shampoos, chemicals, and drinks.

   "the remaining 69% of the freshwater we use goes into agriculture.  Farms use huge amounts of water for crops and livestock.

   "Look around--almost everything you see was made using water.  I took about 130 L (34 U.S. gal.) of water to make your bike.  Water was used to grow and make the food you eat and the clothes you wear.  Water was even used to make the paper for this book--and the ink used to print the words.

   "1.  It takes about 185 L  (49 U.S. gal.) of water to produce just one glass of milk.  This includes the water the cow drinks, the water used to grow food for the cow and the water needed to process the milk.

   "2.  About 147,000 L  (38,000 U.S. gal.) of water was needed to make your family's car.

   "3.  A lot of water is required to produce the food you eat.  Approximately 5200 L (1375 U.S. gal.) of water is needed just to make one fast food lunch (burger, fries and a soda.)

   "4.  In North American homes, the bathroom is where about three-quarters of all water is used.  One flush of the toilet uses nearly 13 L (3 1/2 U. S. gal.)

   "5.  Nearly a billion people around the world depend on fish as their primary source of protein.

   "6.  Thirsty?  People drink an average of 2 1/2 L (2/3 U.S. gal.) of water a day.  In your lifetime, you will drink the equivalent of a backyard swimming pool of water."

THE CHURCH WORSHIPS TOGETHER “Patient Trust” by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay. We should like to skip the intermediate stages. We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new. And yet it is the law of all progress that it is made by passing through some stages of instability— and that it may take a very long time. ~Gathering~ Prelude Welcome& Announcements Introductory Poem: As we step into Lent, we say “welcome” to the dissonance. “We reserve a space for lament and grief to stay a while and do their work. We release our nice little pictures of perfect selves, perfect faith, perfect world, and look for God in the heartache. We listen for God in discordant melodies and follow Jesus to the cross, though we don’t understand and it doesn’t compute.” As we step into Lent, we say, “welcome” to the dissonance, trusting that God is here, now, in the mystery, before it is resolved. Focus Statement: This week, our attention turns to the cast of characters beyond Jesus at his “trial.” Notice the roles various people play in this horrible moment. We are faced with our dissonance when we feel powerless, complicit, innocent, or accused. Hymn of Dissonance: VT 48 Come, My Way, My Truth, My Life (This hymn was chosen for its dissonant harmonies as well as for the words. Today we will sing all verses.) Call to Worship: All: Welcome Lent— WL: terrible dissonance, as we condemn the Human One. All: Welcome lament and confession WL: as the story comes undone. All: Welcome holy mystery WL: that even this can find a place in the tale of God’s salvation. All: Welcome suffering love and grace. Invocation Hymn of Gathering: HWB 37 Praise to the Lord ~Praising & Praying~ Prayers of the People Confession Poem: All: Jesus, things don’t always turn out the way we expect. Or want. And sometimes your choices (or the choices of our neighbors or family members or politicians) really don’t agree with us. Reader 1: We hate to admit it, but we feel for the angry crowd. In our fury, we too can become so consumed, so focused on who or what we are opposing, that we turn away from the things that matter most. Reader 2: “We have no king but the emperor!” we find ourselves saying. And only after we hear our voice do we realize how distorted our allegiance has become. God, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Just as Jesus endured the trials of Holy Week, we too are committed to wait and to fully experience the dissonance in our lives. The worship services during this season will attempt to help us be more comfortable with the dissonances—as reflected in the altar, the music, in the book of John on which our services will focus, and in those disturbing times in our lives. After the sermon during Lent, there will be a three-minute period where we will be writing our thoughts about one of the questions printed on the bulletin insert. When the three minutes are over, the offering plates will be passed for you to put your paper in the plate to be taken to the altar. Please put your pen on the seat beside you so that we can continue to use them each Sunday in Lent. FMC LIVES IN DISCIPLESHIP TOGETHER Mission Project for March: MCC Hygiene Kits Keeping clean is an important part of staying healthy. Families who have fled their homes because of disaster or war often struggle to afford the necessary supplies. Kits also go to schools or orphanages to encourage healthy habits for children. A list of items needed is on the table in the coffee and fellowship area. Fox is having a three-part Biblical event starting tonight at 8 p.m . called The Faithful: Women of the Bible. Each episode follows the journey of five women of faith: Sarah, Hagar, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel. THE CHURCH GIVES THANKS FOR Mike Keim: Jim Cahill continues to do well. THE CHURCH PRAYS FOR Mike Keim: Chris went into a fib yesterday and needs our prayers. April Shupe: Karissa’s mom fell and broke her shoulder. She had her shoulder replaced. Linda Yoder: Mom had blockage of 95% and had a stint put in. Dan Hostetler: Nate Miller has passed away.
