THE CHURCH WORSHIPS TOGETHER

Beholding God’s Perfecting Work Through Daily Practice

Prelude “Speak, O Lord” –arr. Mary McDonald

Welcome & Announcements

Focus Statement:

Continuing to worship and focus our lives on Jesus daily is difficult because we’re continually barraged by other things competing for our attention—our jobs, the things we love to do, the daily necessities that need to be tended to, etc. But if we persevere and practice, we can improve. We get inspiration and encouragement from this scripture in Hebrews 12:1-3:

Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,

let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so

easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race

marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and

perfector of faith.  For the joy set before him he endured the

cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the

throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition

from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Time of Meditation: “O God, Our Help in Ages Past”

Call To Worship: Deuteronomy 6:4-7

Invocation (everyone reads together)

Come, Holy One, work upon us, set us on fire and clasp us

close, be fragrant to us, draw us to your loveliness; let us love,

let us run to you. Amen.

Hymn of Gathering: VT 42 Could It Be That God Is Singing

Statement of Our Faith

--  Shared Confession of Mennonite World Conference

All: By the grace of God, we seek to live and proclaim the

good news of reconciliation in Jesus Christ.  As part of the

one body of Christ, at all times and places, we hold the

following to be central to our belief and practice:

1.    (Bruce, Sue, Amy, Greta)

God is known to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Creator who seeks to restore fallen humanity by calling a people to be faithful in fellowship, worship, service, and witness.

2.    (Bertie, Brad, Hannah)

Jesus is the Son of God. Through his life and teachings, his cross and resurrection, he showed us how to be faithful disciples, redeemed the world, and offers eternal life.

3.    (Reno, Keo, Nancy, Lizzie)

As a church, we are a community of those whom God’s Spirit calls to turn from sin, acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord, receive baptism upon confession of faith, and follow Christ in life.

4.    (Bob, Julie, April)

As a faith community, we accept the Bible as our authority for faith and life, interpreting it together under Holy Spirit guidance, in the light of Jesus Christ to discern God’s will for our obedience.

5.    (Tabatha, Tyler, Jaden, Dylan)

The Spirit of Jesus empowers us to trust God in all areas of life, so we become peacemakers who renounce violence, love our enemies, seek justice, and share our possessions with those in need.

6.    (Herb, Helene, Monk, Linda)

We gather regularly to worship, to celebrate the Lord’s Supper, and to hear the Word of God in a spirit of mutual accountability.

7.    (Mike, Kristy, Dan, Amy)

As a worldwide community of faith and life, we transcend boundaries of nationality, race class, gender and language. We seek to live in the world without conforming to the powers of evil, witnessing to God’s grace by serving others, caring for creation, and inviting all people to know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

All: In these convictions we draw inspiration from

Anabaptist forebearers of the sixteenth century, who

modeled radical discipleship to Jesus Christ. We seek

to walk in his name by the power of the Holy Spirit, as

we confidently await Christ’s return and the final

       fulfillment of God’s Kingdom.

Summer Series: Beholding and Becoming

We are entering the  longest season of the Christian Year, the  Sundays after Pentecost, or what is also called Ordinary Time.  For many, it feels rather ordinary, week after week of the long spring and summer and even into the early fall season. Yet, it could be argued that this season is where our faith gets put to the test, where the church takes the stage and seeks to live out all that has been learned as we show to the world what living in the kingdom looks like. We will begin with the theme, Beholding and Becoming. English poet William Blake may have been the first to say, ‘We become what we behold,’ but in 2 Corinthians, Paul describes true beholding and becoming for us who long to become like Christ:

We all with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,

are being transformed into the same image from one degree

of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the

Spirit. ---2 Corinthians 3:18

Here, in the season after Pentecost, we ascribe to God all the glory, all the wonder, all the joy that is within us. By gazing at the nature of God with unveiled minds, we can be more like Him. This is our invitation to you to be transformed this summer, one everyday moment at a time.

Note: What are you beholding this summer? Please share pictures of what you are thinking on, meditating on, and/or enjoying seeing the glory of the Lord in. Please send pictures to the church email at

office@firstmennonitesugarcreek.com, and look for them to be a part of the bulletin board display outside of the office. Please see April or Tabby if you have any questions.

THE CHURCH WORSHIPS TOGETHER Anabaptism at 500 Belief Five: Worship “Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” ~Gathering in the Royal Bible Classroom~ (around tables) Welcome and Announcements Focus Statement: Worship is a time when church members come together to pray, sing, read Scripture, share with each other, and give praise to God. It can be a time of fellowship, comfort, celebration, or a call for renewed action. It is a time to come together in God’s presence and remember why we make Jesus the center of our lives. Believers can worship in a church building, in a home, or in a boat—worship can happen anywhere. Scripture: Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them..” Time of Meditation : VT 1 Summoned by the God Who Made Us v1-4 Call to Worship: Leader: Wake up, O First Mennonite people! Roth, Director of the Institute for the Study of Global Anabaptism As residents of Holmes and Tuscarawas counties, oftentimes we each have been asked, “Are Mennonites Amish?” and “What do you believe that’s different from other Protestant denominations?” It’s sometimes hard to come up with an explanation of our faith. Hopefully this series of worship services (that will be spread out through this year of Anabaptism at 500) will enable us to answer these questions more accurately. We are basing this series on the above-mentioned book. In conjunction with our Anabaptist at Five Hundred celebration this year, we would love to have pictures of any community, service and/or peace experiences our church members have experienced over the years. Please give to April or Tabby who will scan them into the computer. You will get them back. FMC LIVES IN DISCIPLESHIP TOGETHER Mission Project #1 for June/July: Dress A Child As one school year ends, this program looks forward to the new 2025-26 school year.
