THE CHURCH WORSHIPS TOGETHER

Summer Series 5

Come to the Water: Storms

~Gathering~

Prelude: "Spirit of God"--arr. Fredrick Atkinson

Welcome & Announcements:

Focus Statement: Storms are a part of life just as much as the happy

times or easy times.  How do we navigate when we are in the midst of a

raging storm?  Do you run and hide like Jonah?  Do you question God,

why?  Or are you like Peter, "Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on

the water."  "Come," said Jesus.  Storms will happen.  Keeping your eye

on Jesus will get you through the storm.

~Thirsting~

Time of Meditation: "There is a Balm in Gilead"--arr. Anna Laura Page

Call to Worship:

L:  All of you who feel dry and thirsty, come to the water.  Fill your hands. Splash your face.  Drink deeply.  Let it run down your chin!  Creator God,

our Living Water, we give thanks,

P:  for springs of water and deep wells, for the streams and rivers of our watershed, for the rains that fall--

All:  We give thanks for the water that sustains our life.

(pour a stream of water from the pitcher into the vase)

L:  We give thanks, O God,

P:  for water that washes and cleans, for water that refreshes and restores--

All:  We give thanks for the water that sustains our life.

(pour a stream of water from the pitcher into the vase)

L:  We give thanks, O God,

All:  for your love and mercy, pouring into our lives, soaking into our parched places, filling us up to the brim, overflowing in us to be a blessing for all.

(pour the remining water into the vase)

L:  Come to the Water.

August 14, 2022:  People at the Well

"Since the beginning of time, people have depended on water--for drinking, for food, for bathing and for watering their crops.  Water has always provided a highway to move people and products from place to place.  As cities and societies grow so does their need for water.

"Today, water is essential in our homes, in industry and in agriculture.  At home we use water for cleaning, cooking, drinking, flushing toilets and for bathing.  But homes account for only 10% of all the freshwater used.

"About 21% of the water we use goes to make everything from computer to cars.  Water it used in hydroelectric plants to generate electricity and in petroleum plants to make gas.  In factories, water is used to heat things up or cool things down and to wash away waste.  Water vapor (steam) even runs machinery.  Water is also an ingredient in many products, such as lotions, shampoos, chemicals, and drinks.

"the remaining 69% of the freshwater we use goes into agriculture.  Farms use huge amounts of water for crops and livestock.

"Look around--almost everything you see was made using water.  I took about 130 L (34 U.S. gal.) of water to make your bike.  Water was used to grow and make the food you eat and the clothes you wear.  Water was even used to make the paper for this book--and the ink used to print the words.

"1.  It takes about 185 L  (49 U.S. gal.) of water to produce just one glass of milk.  This includes the water the cow drinks, the water used to grow food for the cow and the water needed to process the milk.

"2.  About 147,000 L  (38,000 U.S. gal.) of water was needed to make your family's car.

"3.  A lot of water is required to produce the food you eat.  Approximately 5200 L (1375 U.S. gal.) of water is needed just to make one fast food lunch (burger, fries and a soda.)

"4.  In North American homes, the bathroom is where about three-quarters of all water is used.  One flush of the toilet uses nearly 13 L (3 1/2 U. S. gal.)

"5.  Nearly a billion people around the world depend on fish as their primary source of protein.

"6.  Thirsty?  People drink an average of 2 1/2 L (2/3 U.S. gal.) of water a day.  In your lifetime, you will drink the equivalent of a backyard swimming pool of water."

THE CHURCH WORSHIPS TOGETHER Anabaptism at 500 Belief Five: Worship “Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” ~Gathering in the Royal Bible Classroom~ (around tables) Welcome and Announcements Focus Statement: Worship is a time when church members come together to pray, sing, read Scripture, share with each other, and give praise to God. It can be a time of fellowship, comfort, celebration, or a call for renewed action. It is a time to come together in God’s presence and remember why we make Jesus the center of our lives. Believers can worship in a church building, in a home, or in a boat—worship can happen anywhere. Roth, Director of the Institute for the Study of Global Anabaptism As residents of Holmes and Tuscarawas counties, oftentimes we each have been asked, “Are Mennonites Amish?” and “What do you believe that’s different from other Protestant denominations?” It’s sometimes hard to come up with an explanation of our faith. Hopefully this series of worship services (that will be spread out through this year of Anabaptism at 500) will enable us to answer these questions more accurately. We are basing this series on the above-mentioned book. In conjunction with our Anabaptist at Five Hundred celebration this year, we would love to have pictures of any community, service and/or peace experiences our church members have experienced over the years. Please give to April or Tabby who will scan them into the computer. You will get them back. FMC LIVES IN DISCIPLESHIP TOGETHER Mission Project #1 for June/July: Dress A Child As one school year ends, this program looks forward to the new 2025-26 school year. Giving our students who attend school in Tuscarawas County a fresh new set of clothes to begin the year is a wonderful blessing. Dress A Child raises money to serve the children in our county whose families meet the federal poverty guidelines. Last year, they were able to give 980 children $85.00 worth of new clothing! Make checks payable to First Mennonite, and one check will be sent at the end of the month from our church to Dress A Child. Thank you! “Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.” -Pope Francis Mission Project #2 for June/July: MCC My Coins Count Relief Sale Project Each year, spare change (and bills!) collected by families and churches adds up to more than $600,000 toward MCC’s work around the world. Drop your coins, bills and/or checks in the bread basket on the table in the rear of the sanctuary.
